Feelin’ Groovy in Portugal

Alongside the usual sound of the fire alarm, musical notes were ringing last weekend at The Sao Bras Fire Station. On Saturday, 30 November, more than a dozen wannabe singers arrived at the Station to spend a day learning how to sing in four part harmony, a cappella style. Dutch, German, English and Spanish men and women joined together for a full-on coaching day, learning about posture, breathing, vowel matching, choreography and performance.

Organised by the Spanish Association of Barbershop Singers (SABS), the day was hosted by local barbershop chorus, Bella A Cappella, and assisted by their Musical Director, Sylvy Hinton-Keenan. The delegates had been issued with music and teach tracks in advance, so they had already learned their part in readiness for the course. Barbershop is sung by men’s, ladies’ and mixed choruses and all sing Bass, Baritone, Tenor and Lead (the melody) to produce the unique sound.

After a full day’s rehearsal and a short break, the barbershop €˜newbies’ returned to perform their song, €˜Feelin’ Groovy’, to family and friends, receiving rapturous applause. «The whole day was really enjoyable and I learned so much. I never thought that I would be able to sing in harmony, but the trainers made it really easy for me and I loved every minute of it.» commented one delegate. «I wish I had discovered barbershop years ago and I would definitely like to carry on singing with a chorus.»

As a result of the course, Bella A Cappella is looking forward to welcoming several new members to their weekly rehearsals. «Visitors and new members are always welcome» said MD Sylvy «And we’d love to see more men and women join us.» Bella a Cappella rehearses in Moncarapacho every Tuesday between 19:00 and 21:00.
